The Press Responds to Microsofts New Windows Phones Announcement

Well, the press (generically) are responding quite rapidly to Microsoft's recent announcement of New Windows Phones and a new version of their Windows Mobile OS.

The majority of the press articles I've read agree with my personal opinion: Windows Mobile is the ugly stepsister of all the smartphone OSs! It's clunky, slow, resource intensive, and ugly. Microsoft is still in the same position they were in when they entered the smartphone race: way at the back of the pack, busy trying to play catch-up with both their software (OS and apps) and hardware. While Palm spent many years putting Windows Mobile (in all it's various names and incarnations) to shame, currently it's the iPhone that's taken on that position. This latest announcement is just another "look, see what we have (copied)" gambit by Microsoft.

One of the more interesting responses is in an article entitled "Microsoft still has no iPhone answer" on Digital Noise - a blog about music and technology by Matt Rosoff for cnet news.

In part Matt says:

Most of Microsoft's announcements Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona were leaked weeks ago, so there weren't any big surprises.
  • There's a new mobile OS, Windows Mobile 6.5, that's supposed to be friendlier than the notoriously clunky earlier versions.
  • There's a set of cloud-based services for synchronizing data like contacts and photos.
  • There's a marketplace for Windows Mobile apps.
Assuming that any of this makes you want to run out and buy a Windows Mobile phone, too bad. None of it's available until late this year.

I found Matt's article quite interesting, so click through and read the whole thing.

Microsoft Reveals New Windows Phones

Microsoft announced today at the Mobile World Congress that they have a new Windows Mobile operating system (version 6.5) and that their partners have several really neat new phones.

Microsoft Reveals New Windows® Phones With Marketplace and My Phone Services

Microsoft mobile partners fly the Windows flag: HTC, LG and Orange preview first Windows® phones.

BARCELONA, Spain — 16 Feb. 2009 — Today at Mobile World Congress 2009, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer along with key mobile partners, HTC, LG and Orange, unveiled new Windows® phones featuring new user-friendly software and services. The next generation of Windows® phones will be based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and feature a new user interface and a richer browsing experience. In addition, Windows® phones will feature two new services: My Phone, to sync text messages, photos, video, contacts and more to the Web; and Windows® Marketplace for Mobile, a new marketplace that will provide direct-to-phone mobile applications and can be accessed from both the phone and the Web.

“Windows® phones bring together the best of the Web, the PC and the phone so you can connect instantly to the experiences you care about, no matter where you are,” Ballmer said. “We’re working with partners across the industry to deliver a new generation of Windows® phones that break down the barriers between people, information and applications and provide great end-to-end experiences that span your entire life, at work and at home.”

Windows Mobile 6.5 Delivers New User Experience

The new Windows Mobile 6.5 home screen keeps people up-to-date on important information by providing a dashboard-like experience to items such as new e-mails, texts, missed calls and calendar appointments. It also includes an improved touch-screen interface, making it easy to take action with a finger, and an updated version of the latest Internet Explorer Mobile browser, which in a third-party research study sponsored by Microsoft supported execution of up to 48 percent more assigned tasks than the other browsers and phones studied.

My Phone Service Connects the Phone to the Web

The free My Phone service will enable people to access, manage and back up their personal information on their device to a password-protected Web-based service, making it easier to upgrade phones without the worry of losing important information. With automatic syncing and backup, users can count on their contacts, appointments, text messages and other information being kept up to date and easily restored should they lose or upgrade their phone. Consumers also will be able to automatically upload photos and video from their Windows® phone directly to the My Phone service, making it simple to preserve content that, in the past, would have lived and died on the phone. The My Phone service is currently available in a limited invitation-only beta.

Rich and Integrated Marketplace Service Will Offer Easy Access to Mobile Applications

The new operating system features Windows® Marketplace for Mobile, a rich and integrated marketplace for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from Windows® phones or from a PC by simply using a Windows Live ID. The new marketplace will be included with all Windows phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, which will help consumers to easily find, install and experience those applications that fit their needs and make the phone truly personal. Developers, who have already built over 20,000 applications for Windows® phones, will be able to offer applications to customers through the marketplace via a simple security and compatibility check from Microsoft.

Treo Pro by Palm (Unlocked), Now Available in USA

We received the following Press Release this afternoon via the Palm Canada News distribution list. However, all of these links will point you to the Treo Pro at the Palm USA online Store. The Treo Pro isn't listed at all on the Palm Canada site. In fact, the only Treo listed at the Palm Canada Store is the Treo 750. As far as the they are concerned, none of the following even exist: Treo 680, Treo 755p, Treo Centro, Treo 800 and Treo Pro! I for one am glad to see we have such a good neighbour as Palm USA is to Palm Canada.

Treo Pro by Palm, Now Available, Offers True End-to-End Enterprise Solution
Enterprise Support Programs -- Including a Two-Year Limited Warranty -- Available for Unlocked Treo Pro

SUNNYVALE, Calif., 26 Sep 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that the unlocked Treo(TM) Pro smartphone is now available in the United States. With its unmatched blend of Palm's ease-of-use innovations, Windows Mobile 6.1, and enterprise support in a sleek new design, Treo Pro is a world phone built end-to-end for the global enterprise. It allows businesses to simplify their IT infrastructures while lowering costs and keeping their users productive and happy.
Treo Pro balances simplicity and productivity -- including email, Wi-Fi, GPS, web and UMTS/HSDPA network capabilities(1) -- to meet the needs of businesses and end users alike. Its thin design blends a flush, high-resolution color touch screen, one-touch buttons and a full QWERTY keyboard. The removable battery packs up to five hours of talk time and enough strength for the business user's needs, offering a powerful yet effortless mobile experience.
Treo Pro is unlocked, giving end users the flexibility to simply insert their existing active SIM card and immediately start using their Treo Pro anywhere there is GSM coverage, without a new contract.(2) Worldwide travelers using the Treo Pro can cut costs on international roaming charges by popping in a local country SIM card wherever they go.(3)
Because Treo Pro runs Windows Mobile 6.1, it is compatible with System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, which Microsoft launched earlier this year. Adding value to mobile enterprise solutions, Mobile Device Manager allows IT professionals to manage Windows Mobile phones similarly to how they manage PCs and laptops.
"More than 33 million Converged Mobile Devices [CMDs] will ship in the U.S. in 2012, representing a growth of 37 percent, and we expect Windows Mobile device shipments to grow by nearly 48 percent in the U.S.," said Sean Ryan, Research Analyst, with the Mobile Enterprise practice at IDC. "Businesses want tools that enable their mobile workers to be highly responsive to customers and make better decisions. Rapid innovation around capabilities, connectivity, and performance is making converged devices increasingly attractive to enterprises looking to give their mobile workers an edge."
Treo Pro Support and Service
An enterprise product deserves enterprise-caliber support. Total cost of ownership is critical to Palm's business customers, and IT hardware cycles often exceed typical 12-month consumer warranties. Palm therefore is offering a 24-month limited warranty for qualifying business customers who deploy Treo Pro within their organizations. Should their smartphone require repair, customers can feel confident that they are protected from unforeseen costs and that Palm-authorized technicians will repair it or replace it with genuine Palm parts. The 24-month limited warranty lets companies extend the life of their investment, lowering the total cost of ownership and removing the burden from IT in the second year.
There are also a variety of support programs available for business customers, designed to be scalable to customers' needs and budgets. Palm's support services help businesses plan, deploy and support their mobile workforces, whether that means simply augmenting current capabilities with specialized support services or completely outsourcing the management of mobile solutions.
"For Treo Pro, we're approaching support with our heaviest users in mind," said John Moses, vice president of Customer Relations at Palm, Inc. "These international business customers often have the highest expectations and need assistance on important setup tasks, like safely migrating valuable calendar and contact data, configuring multiple email accounts and installing productivity software. We're here to ensure that their first moments with Treo Pro and their overall support experience exemplify Palm ease of use."
More information about Palm enterprise support is available at http://www.palm.com/enterprisesupport.
Pricing and Availability
Treo Pro is now available for a suggested retail price of $549 through the Palm online store (http://www.palm.com/store). Treo Pro, along with partner-provided services and support, also is available from Palm's extensive reseller network of Internet, retail and corporate resellers, including CDW, Dell, PC Connection, PC Mall and Enterprise Mobile.
The Treo Pro smartphone comes with a power charger, microUSB cable and a stereo headset (3.5mm). Other accessories designed exclusively for Treo Pro (sold separately) include a vehicle power charger, leather side case, travel microUSB cable, cradle, extra battery, TTY audio adapter, and replacement styli.
More information about the Treo Pro smartphone is available at www.palm.com/TreoPro.

Treo Pro Supporting Customer Quotes
Ohio State University Medical Center:
"Offering Treo Pro as an unlocked device is a very good business move on Palm's part," said Wasif Malik, senior systems consultant, Student Educational Services & Mobile Solutions, Ohio State University Medical Center. "A phone is a personal statement, and people want the flexibility to use it where they want without contract requirements and pricey roaming charges. Selling unlocked phones has been a very popular business model in Europe and globally this has been the trend."
Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream:
"Palm did a really nice job getting Treo Pro to the right size," said Mike Corby, director of Business Excellence, Sales and Distribution at Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream. "It's significantly thinner, yet the keyboard is still easy to use. The design is very intuitive, so there's no steep learning curve, and the screen brightness is the best I've seen -- especially outside. People who see me using it keep asking me about it -- they love the look of it."

Palm Treo 850 specs leaked – it HAS WiFi!

Tam Hanna (of TamsPalm and TamsPPC fame) has just posted a new article entitled:
"Palm Treo 850 specs leaked – it HAS WiFi!"

Here's a brief summary:

Palm’s Treo smart phones have been extremely popular ever since the Treo 600 introduced the QWERTY candybar format – Palm switched them over to Windows Mobile some time ago with the launch of the Treo 700w. However, WiFi has been a notable omission from all Treos so far – apparently, Palm has now addressed that in the upcoming (WM-Powered) Treo 850.

A Palm insider has provided us with a reliable list of specs – the device will be powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 and will have a WiFi radio inside. Other than that, we also know the amount of memory available to users, - generally everything.

Be sure to follow the link to read the entire article. TamsPPC also has an article with the first shapshot of the Treo 850.

This is a very exciting announcement, considering how long we've been waiting for WiFi to be integrated into the Treo hardware, but since this one runs Windows Mobile (which just doesn't work for me) I can't wait to see this hardware running PalmOS!

FunContact (Windows Mobile) has become faster!

Minor changes make big difference!
28 January, 2008 – VITO Technology releases a new version of FunContact. New version 2.1 of the contact manager loads in the twinkling of an eye. Managing contacts has become faster and still much fun! Minor bugs have been fixed.

Along with finger friendly touch oriented interface like on iPhone FunContact has other awesome features up its sleeve that turn Windows Mobile contact management into real FUN:

  • quick access to favorite contacts
  • quick access to call history
  • instant finger scroll with alphabetic ruler
  • keypad for dialing and T9 contacts look up
  • built-in contacts editing
  • sparkling graphics
  • smooth navigation
  • animated menus and
  • big onscreen buttons

FunContactThere’s been a definite call from FunContact users to speed up initial start of FunContact. The new version of FunContact starts about 8 times quicker!

Memory usage has also been optimized. Now you can have FunContact running safely in background without having to worry how much memory is left for other applications.

Another new feature allows you to add a new contact or update an existing contact with a new number right from the call log.

Lefthanders will be surprised to see the alphabetic ruler appearing on the left side of the screen. It used to appear only on the right side of the screen and lefthanders could not see the big letter in the center of the screen while sliding the ruler for quick contact look-up.

In addition, minor bugs have been fixed. Contact sorting is saved alright even if you exit FunContact. The pretty Korean girl that appeared as default photo for all contacts is gone.

FunContact is available for $19.95 at http://iWindowsMobile.com. Current users upgrade for free.

VITO Technology Inc. is known for its high-tech products in the field of Windows Mobile and Symbian software, GPS navigation and custom projects. Introduced in the present article FunContact is a touch oriented finger friendly contact manager for Windows Mobile Pocket PC.

FunContact 2.0 to Blow Your Mind! (Windows Mobile)

FunContactFunContact 2.0 to Blow Your Mind!
Farewell to default Windows Mobile contacts

29 December, 2007 – VITO Technology releases a new version of FunContact. Managing contacts on your Windows Mobile Pocket PC has become easier and more fun! New features on top of finger friendly and stylish interface make FunContact a truly irreplaceable contact manager. Now even more visual effects!

The new sliding out keypad allows you to easily dial numbers missing from your contacts. All it takes is tapping the red arrow, and here you are dialing the number you need. T9 contacts look up is also possible on this keypad like on smartphones.

New version of FunContact provides its own contact editing. It has become possible to edit or add new contacts without going to the default WM contacts. Forget about default contacts with its old-fashioned looks and awkward editing. Now you can easily edit your contacts right from FunContact, delete, add new fields, etc. You’ll find out that editing contacts is fun as well!

The calls in call history are now grouped by the type of calls (missed, incoming or outgoing calls) and by the date. All types of calls for the same contact are grouped separately for each day. This way you will see only one record in the list even if you got several calls from a certain contact: only the last one is displayed.

Once you started using FunContact it’s difficult to come back to the default contacts. You simply enjoy managing your contacts with finger. Clinton Fitch, the well known MVP says: "Having used FunContact for several weeks now it is hard to see myself not using it going forward. It has made contacting those on my contact list quicker and far easier with the ability to SMS or e-mail them with only a tap or two versus using the native Windows Mobile applications."

FunContact is available for $19.95 at http://iWindowsMobile.com and http://vitotechnology.com. Look out for 25% HOLIDAY DISCOUNT! Current users upgrade for free.

VITO Technology Inc. (founded in Novosibirsk, Russia) is known for its high-tech products in the field of Windows Mobile and Symbian software, GPS navigation and custom projects. Introduced in the present article FunContact is a touch oriented contact manager for Windows Mobile Pocket PC.
