Official Palm Blog Post on Palm's Stock Price

Yesterday (30 Jan 2008), in a post on the Official Palm Blog entitled "Clearing up a Misconception - Palm's Stock Price", Paul Loeffler tries to explain some of the "misleading statements in recent articles about our stock price".

Primarily, he points out that since Palm paid out $9 per share last October, we need to add that $9 onto the current share price, if we want to make a fair comparison against historic Palm stock price (before the $9 pay out).

If this is a valid strategy, I can see how people (stock holders, investors, the public, etc.) might be concerned. Since Palm stock is currently (Jan 2008) at $5.42, it does appear to have dropped significantly from last year, since Paul's info places Palm stock at $13.84 in Jan 2007.

This "adjustment before comparison" did make sense to me... but then I'm not a financial whiz.

Minor changes make big difference!
28 January, 2008 – VITO Technology releases a new version of FunContact. New version 2.1 of the contact manager loads in the twinkling of an eye. Managing contacts has become faster and still much fun! Minor bugs have been fixed.

Along with finger friendly touch oriented interface like on iPhone FunContact has other awesome features up its sleeve that turn Windows Mobile contact management into real FUN:

  • quick access to favorite contacts
  • quick access to call history
  • instant finger scroll with alphabetic ruler
  • keypad for dialing and T9 contacts look up
  • built-in contacts editing
  • sparkling graphics
  • smooth navigation
  • animated menus and
  • big onscreen buttons

FunContactThere’s been a definite call from FunContact users to speed up initial start of FunContact. The new version of FunContact starts about 8 times quicker!

Memory usage has also been optimized. Now you can have FunContact running safely in background without having to worry how much memory is left for other applications.

Another new feature allows you to add a new contact or update an existing contact with a new number right from the call log.

FunContact is available for $19.95 at http://iWindowsMobile.com. Current users upgrade for free.

VITO Technology Inc. is known for its high-tech products in the field of Windows Mobile and Symbian software, GPS navigation and custom projects. Introduced in the present article FunContact is a touch oriented finger friendly contact manager for Windows Mobile Pocket PC.

Whoa. I'm awake now. The press release above just arrived and I must admit I find it to be quite surprising, and maybe, a little sad. I always felt that Astraware was more of a 'family' business, while Handmark was, I guess, just a business. To be sure, I've got nothing against Handmark. It's just... well, it just seems to me to be like Astraware was the 'Mom & Pop' shop (though with a much younger feel), while Handmark was a 'Big Box' store (though with a lot better staff).

I hope that Astraware is able to infuse (or share or pass on), what ever it is that makes them feel like a 'family business' to the rest of Handmark; on top of all the great software titles, programming talent and other excellent staff, etc. Astraware is bringing "to the table" of course. Actually, they both have a lot of these last items.

I wish both members of the new "Handmark Family" the best of luck in this new endeavour!

Last chance to download JVM for PalmOS

PalmOS Java Virtual MachineWithout giving any kind of real explanation, Palm is going to strip the Palm Java Virtual Machine download off their site as of 12 Jan 2008. I haven't seen any kind of Press Release, but here is the posting from the Official Palm Blog, in their own words, literally:

For the past few years, Palm has provided a download of the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to our customers, which allowed users to install and run Java applications and games on their devices.

As of Jan. 12, 2008, we will no longer be providing this as a downloadable application from our website. We will continue to support the JVM on our website, but will not be able to offer version upgrades or software downloads.

Tim P. - Product Manager

If you're the least bit unsure whether you have a copy of the latest version of the "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment v5.7.2 for your Palm device" which is a free download for the "Treo 600, Treo 650, Treo 680 and Treo 700 P smartphones, T|X, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E, Tungsten E2, Tungsten T5 and Zire 72 handhelds, LifeDrive mobile manager", then I strongly suggest you download a copy soon, before it's gone in few days, for good.

There is one interesting (to me anyway) side note to this story. The Palm JVM download page states that the latest version was "Posted July 13, 2007" but the majority of the files in the archive are dated 8 Feb 2007 and the newest file is dated 12 April 2007. It seems it took 3 months for Palm to post this version - probably due to compatibility testing. Well, at least I'd like to think that was the reason for the delay.

PS: Our thanks go out to Ryan Rix from the TamsPalm blog for the heads up on this news.
