Without giving any kind of real explanation, Palm is going to strip the Palm Java Virtual Machine download off their site as of 12 Jan 2008. I haven't seen any kind of Press Release, but here is the posting from the Official Palm Blog, in their own words, literally:
For the past few years, Palm has provided a download of the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to our customers, which allowed users to install and run Java applications and games on their devices.
As of Jan. 12, 2008, we will no longer be providing this as a downloadable application from our website. We will continue to support the JVM on our website, but will not be able to offer version upgrades or software downloads.

If you're the least bit unsure whether you have a copy of the latest version of the "
WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment v5.7.2 for your Palm device" which is a free download for the "Treo 600, Treo 650, Treo 680 and Treo 700 P smartphones, T|X, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E, Tungsten E2, Tungsten T5 and Zire 72 handhelds, LifeDrive mobile manager", then I strongly suggest you download a copy soon, before it's gone in few days, for good.
There is one interesting (to me anyway) side note to this story. The
Palm JVM download page states that the latest version was "
Posted July 13, 2007" but the majority of the files in the archive are dated 8 Feb 2007 and the newest file is dated 12 April 2007. It seems it took 3 months for Palm to
post this version - probably due to compatibility testing. Well, at least I'd like to think that was the reason for the delay.
PS: Our thanks go out to Ryan Rix from the
TamsPalm blog for the heads up on this news.
