Bubble Ship Boy Unleashed

Over the past few weeks I sure you've been wondering what Bubble Ship Boy was all about. Well it's finally been released! We at Canuck PDA got a chance to check it out and here's how we see things.

Gameplay
I absolutely love the seamless integration of the game style to fit in with the PalmOS. It's one of those few game that are optimized for the 320x320 screen. And by that, I mean it's not just some scaled-down port of an existing game, it's somepletely original. This game really seems to be designed from the ground up for the PalmOS user. This game is easily comparable to that of Bejeweled, Insaniquarium, or any other arcade-style game. This is one of those games that you would love to play during a 10 minute bus ride, or pretty well whenever you have you have time to kill. Bubble Ship Boy is of of those rare gaming gems that are quick and simple to play, whenever and wherever you want.

The gameplay is simple, yet extremely difficult. You need to head upwards to the end of the level, while avoiding the numerous enemies. I found that it was very easy to get addicted to the game, however it often took numerous tries to beat the latter levels. Oh, I forgot to mention, there are only 4 levels, but don't let that discourage you. Each level seems fresh and new, with new challenges each time. I don't particularity like the idea that only 3 hits will kill you, but with the numerous opportunities to pick up items, this is easily forgiven.

The cutscenes and creative plot really show the effort the developers put into making a game that would not only be marketable, but also a game that the average person would want to play. I found myself enthrolled by the plot of playing in the role of n-droo, an alien from the planet Velition who unwittingly finds himself alone and on the trail of the evil Deek Furple.

The main menu's user interface is very simple and intuative. I love the ability to enable invincibility, just for fun. I adds a new dimension to the game. I would have loved if you could do timed levels where you had to complete the level in a certain amount of time. Hopefully we might see something similar, or even a scoring system, in future releases.

Graphics and Sounds
Breathtaking. That's the only way to properly describe the graphics in this game. The graphics are classic-style with an updated look. The characters look amazing. Absolutely original with fantastic cutscene graphics. The graphics are easily better than most PalmOS games out there and are perfectly integrated into the program. I only wish there was landscape/portrait support. There is no easy way to fully describe the graphics so I suggest you check it out yourself.

The sound in this game is equally impressive. It really brings the environment to life. The developers clearly put a lot of thought and effort into this game to make it the best it can be.

Controls
The controls in this game are very easy to use. Simply use the stylus to move the character around, and that's it! During gameplay, if you want to return to the menu, all you need to do is hit the menu silkscreen button, simple and effective. I must admit, it's the simplicity of this game that kept me coming back.

My Verdict
This game really has the "zen of palm". Although I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of landscape/portrait support, the graphics and overall simplicity of Bubble Ship Boy make this game a definate winner. I am glad to see another Canadian PalmOS developer and recommend you check out this amazing new game.

Apple to Take a Bite at Palm - The Rumours Resurface

From Personal Computer World:

Speculation that Apple plans to buy handheld maker Palm has been revived by a
call from two leading Palm investors for the company to be put up for sale,
according to the local paper of both companies.

Mike Nelson, who owns eight per cent of Palm shares, argued that the company is poorly equipped to dominate the market for smartphones which are beginning to eat into sales of traditional PDAs, reports Siliconvalley.com , online edition of the San Jose Mercury.
...
Another shareholder, with five per cent of Palm shares, also urged a sale of the company late last year.

Not long ago there were rumours that Apple and Palm would become one, but those eventually died down. Once again, however, those rumours are milling about - albeit not in thte spotlight.

Could it actually be that we will eventually see the successor of the Apple Newton?

Palm to Offer Microsoft Direct Push Technology for Treo 700w

Treo 700w

Palm, Inc. today announced a software update for the Palm Treo 700w smartphone from Verizon Wireless that will enable the Windows Mobile Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP), which includes Direct Push Technology. The free update, which is expected to be available later this month, gives Treo 700w smartphone users fast, automatic wireless updates of their email, calendar items, contacts and tasks, allowing IT managers to deliver this information directly from Exchange Server 2003 SP2 without incurring additional third-party infrastructure costs.

Direct Push email increases the number of choices for enterprise customers looking to deploy secure, push mobile email solutions on the Palm Treo platform. This cost-effective solution allows businesses to increase productivity by satisfying the real-time information needs of mobile professionals, without having to spend additional IT budget on new email servers or licensing fees.

"The Treo 700w with the new Security Feature Pack and the Verizon Wireless high-speed wireless broadband network will give our business customers the enhanced mobile office experience they need to be competitive," said Rich Meigh, Verizon Wireless vice president -- device marketing. "The up-to-the-minute updates provided by this new Messaging and Security Feature Pack translate into increased employee productivity, improved customer responsiveness and faster return on investment for our business customers."

Introduced to customers in early January, the Treo 700w smartphone is the newest member of the Palm Treo family and builds on the award-winning design of the Treo 600 and Treo 650 smartphones. It is the first Treo smartphone to take advantage of Verizon Wireless' high-speed wireless broadband service on its EvDO (Evolution Data Optimized) network and Windows Mobile 5.0. The new smartphone delivers a unique suite of software enhancements on top of Windows Mobile, bringing the hallmark Palm ease of use to Windows Mobile for the first time.

"Direct Push Technology helps Palm Treo 700w customers stay on top of their jobs by quickly receiving and sending email and all other Microsoft Outlook information while they are on-the-go," said Suzan DelBene, corporate vice president of marketing, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "The strong integration between Palm and Microsoft is an example of our commitment to build solid partnerships, creating a thriving mobile-industry ecosystem and raising the mobile experience to great heights."

"Enterprise CIOs have told us that the addition of MSFP to the Treo 700w is key to their wider deployment of the 700w across their companies and deep into their lines of business," said John Hartnett, senior vice president of worldwide sales and customer relations at Palm. "We believe this high-ROI, easy-to-deploy push email and messaging solution will delight CIOs and end users alike. Our collective enterprise sales teams have hundreds of companies lined up and ready to initiate trials, which we expect will soon be under way with the availability of MSFP."

    Key Features of MSFP

-- Direct Push Email Technology that enables the Treo 700w to
automatically receive email, calendar, contacts and tasks
wirelessly as soon as it arrives on Exchange Server 2003 SP2;

-- Over-the-air lookup of a company's Exchange Global Address
List (GAL), providing employees with quick access to
colleagues' email and contact information; and

-- Added security features for IT administrators, such as
over-the-air device password policy enforcement and remote
wipe of the device in case it is lost or stolen

Availability

The update for the Treo 700w will be available later this month on http://dts.vzw.com and http://www.palm.com as a free download and included in subsequent Treo 700w smartphones and future Treo smartphones based on Windows Mobile.

The Palm Treo 700w smartphone from Verizon Wireless is available for $399.99 after $100 instant rebate with a new two-year service agreement when accompanied by a voice plan of $39.99 or higher and an unlimited PDA/smartphone data feature. The Treo 700w is available at the 1,900 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, Verizon Wireless Communications Stores at Circuit City, or on the web at www.verizonwireless.com and www.palm.com. Enterprise customers are encouraged to contact their Verizon Wireless Business Specialist at 800-VZW-4BIZ or www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/businesssolutions.com.
